Last Saturday, Carley, Nana and I took a trip with the Girl Scouts to Dismal Canyons in Phil Campbell, Alabama. It is amazing to me that we have such a beautiful place like this so close to home. We spent 2 and a half hours hiking in the canyons taking in the beautiful waterfalls, streams, bridges and caves. It was just gorgeous. It was amazing how the temps would change from warm in one spot to cool in another, depending on where you were. We even saw our share of snakes. Poor Lisa, one the GS parents almost stepped on one crossing the creek!! After our hike, we took a break on the patio out behind the store for lunch. We took off our socks and shoes to dry out and talk while the girls played and had a good time. At 7:30, our fearless leader, Melanie (who is also a GS parent and works for Dismal Canyon) took us a night tour to see the Dismalites. Dismalites are little worms that when their heads and tails a-line, they give off light. They bed in the moss on the side of the canyons and when they are lit, they look like little stars sprinkled everywhere. It is absolutely gorgeous. They are only know to be 3 places in the world, Japan, New Zealand, and Phil Campbell, Alabama!! Many believe that Jesse James and Rub Burrow hid out there from writings they found describing the "stars" that were spread over the canyons at night. How cool is that?! If you have never been, I highly recommend that you check it out. You will absolutely love it!!
Here are some pics from our trip:
